TUNE INTO THE EMPOWERED BY HOPE PODCAST
Join two parents of amazing children with rare medical complexities, Emily K. Whiting and Ashlyn Thompson, to grow with them into empowered advocates for our kids. Here you’ll find a community of support, encouragement, education and resources, equipping you to navigate your child’s medical complexities with hope.

THERE IS ALWAYS HOPE
The life you expected, anticipated, dreamt and envisioned for your child suddenly shifts. When you are able to take a breath and think again, you know you have to do something, but the question is “What?” How do you begin to handle the myriad of concerns rushing through your mind? Who do you talk to? Where do you turn?
Charlotte’s Hope Foundation was born out of such circumstances faced by two moms who met long before either received their daughter’s unforeseen diagnoses. Both faced incredible fear, worry and sadness, but both also clung to their deeply rooted faith and a strong belief that all things do work together for good. Ashlyn and Emily are still in the throes of raising their young girls who have unique diagnoses and daily challenges, and they are united in their passion to support you in your family’s journey, too.
YOU ARE NOT ALONE
One out of four children in the United States is diagnosed with chronic conditions (CDC, 2019). An emerging subpopulation within pediatric chronic illness is children living with complex chronic conditions.*
LIFE-SUSTAINING SUPPORT
“Many parents (of children with medical complexities) regard hope as the “life-sustaining and essential” process for them.”*
HOPE IS A PROCESS
“Hope is a “deliberate, life-sustaining, dynamic, cyclical process” that is vital in helping parents cope with the cumulative stressors of managing a child’s complex chronic condition.”

SHE IS CHARLOTTE
A Mother’s Physical, Emotional, and Spiritual Journey
with Her Child with Medical Complexities
Shocked with an extensive list of fetal anomalies and life-threatening diagnoses for her sweet potato-sized unborn child, Emily K Whiting’s world, seemingly so secure and certain moments before the fateful ultrasound, flips upside down and inside out. She has a choice: to embrace the gift that is her daughter, loosen her grip on her illusion of control and face an unimaginable series of surgeries and setbacks, or to let fear and mistrust consume her. If she cannot hold onto hope that her daughter might survive, and possibly even thrive, then who can?
This gut-wrenching true story of a mother’s heartache and healing captures the essence of hope and is a window into the realities parents face when raising children with medical complexities. Emily shares her walk with fear and faith with startling vulnerability and transparency and provides practical tips for anyone learning to hold onto hope in the midst of heartache. This is a story of grit, grace and, most of all, love.
